TBT Hiking Post from Hubby - Hike to Canyon's Ski Resort

It's Thursday!! That means another Throwback Thursday post from Hubby. Today's post is a hike, actually a snowshoe hike to Canyon's Ski Resort from Hubby's parents house at the time in Park City, Utah. I remember it being my first time snowshoeing and it was harder than I thought it would be, but it was still fun! :)

Hike to Canyons Ski Resort, December 21, 2006

Sharon came with me to visit my parents in Utah just before Christmas. The first day there, we decided to snowshoe from my parents' house to the Canyons ski resort.
Outside my parents' garage all geared up.

The first part of the trail was well tracked. After we left the main trail, we got into some trees with deeper snow, so we strapped on the snowshoes.
This was Sharon's first try with snowshoes. Here she is showing them off.
After going through the trees and a couple deviations from the intended path, we made it to the ridge I wanted to follow. Navigating in the winter is much more challenging than the summer!
After some steep sections breaking trail on our own, we found a path others had taken and we planned to follow it to our destination. One problem: we weren't sure if it went to our destination. Nonetheless, it was going in the right direction. We had the ridge all to ourselves. It was really beautiful, although a bit windy.
Here's the view we had from the ridge.
We also diverted a bit to bag a high point along the way.
We continued on our way along the path. Unfortunately, it didn't go exactly where I had expected so eventually, we had to go off trail.
I climbed to the high ridge to scout our location. Here's me walking across it. I saw that we were just above the ski run that we had planned to follow down to the base of Canyons Ski Resort, so we did an offtrail traverse and descent and made it over there. Our 4.5 hour hike had turned into a 5.5 hour hike, but it was really fun. My parents picked us up at the bottom with hot chocolate ready for us in the car.:-)

  1. Those pictures are crazy! I've never seen anything like that... We don't have too many mountains in NC-- & we certainly don't have all that snow! I bet that was a killer workout!

  2. It was a great workout and it was so nice that Tim's parents picked us up at the Ski resort with hot chocolate. I remember that hot chocolate tasting so good after such a long hike! :)

  3. Wow! What a journey and view. I've never snowshoed before. Does it feel like cross country skiing? Or harder?

  4. I haven't tried cross country skiing, but I'm guessing snow shoeing is easier than cross country skiing. I guess it also depends on the terrain.
