Fitting in Fitness

Today I am trying out something new and linking up for the first time with Nicole and Jessica Joy for their The Fit Dish Link-Up every Tuesday.

This week the topic is "How Do You FIT in FITNESS?".

With training for the Wineglass half marathon, I have to fit in fitness. Right now I follow Hal Higdon's Intermediate training program. I find that following a training program helps in motivation to get myself moving. I know that if I don't do the workout, it will affect how I perform on my half. I can't always follow it exactly so tweaks are made here and there, but I follow it for the most part. With both kiddos in school on 3 mornings of the week, I try to get my running workouts on those days so I can get outside and run. I love running outside especially because I live so close to such an awesome trail to run on.

If for some reason I can't get in my running workout on one of those days the kiddos are both in school (a playdate, MOMS club meeting, errands, etc..), I head to the gym, where thank goodness there is what they call the "kid's club" aka gym daycare, so my kiddo that doesn't have preschool that morning can play while I work out. The gym has been a lifesaver especially when training for half marathons. My boys were both babies when I started the gym.
Other ways I fit in fitness are by short workout videos. I love T25! T25 is one of my favorites because the workouts are only 25 minutes long. They are an intense 25 minutes and leave you dripping with sweat, always a sign of a great workout. :) I also have just got into PiYo which I also like to do when I can.

When I take the kiddos to the playground, even there I try to fit in some fitness. Things like the monkey bars are great for your arms (I was so happy when I found out that I could still go across) and you can also do things like step ups on benches.

On the weekends, I get my long run in (thankful I have such a supportive hubby that watches the kiddos in the morning while I run). On the rest day, we usually try to do a hike which is also a great outdoor activity for all.

I do also have a Fitbit that motivates me to move. I always try to get in my 10,000 steps. I often park farther just so I can get more steps in. I also like how you can get rewards just by having a Fitbit so that motivates me to be active as well.

One last way that I fit in fitness, especially when I am too busy to get a workout in, is by using the Seven app. I love that you can do this workout anywhere and it is only 7 minutes. Basically a HIIT (High Intensive Interval Training) type of workout that consists of 12 exercises.

The exercises are as follows:
30 seconds Jumping Jacks

30 seconds Wall Sit
30 seconds Push-ups
30 seconds Crunches
30 seconds Step-Ups
30 seconds Squats
30 seconds Triceps Dips
30 seconds Plank
30 seconds High Knees Running In Place
30 seconds Lunges
30 seconds Push-ups with Rotation
30 seconds Side Plank

So those are how I fit in fitness. I find that you just need to make time and give effort to fit fitness in your daily life.

What types of things do you do to fit in fitness?

  1. I love my fitbit too, they are awesome and fun motivators!!! Playing with kids on a playground is seriously a great workout, I get to be the favorite aunt while realizing that ages 3-9 never get tired:)

  2. Now that my kids are older I have way less excuses not to get it done!

  3. Nice post - sometimes I feel I have trouble fitting it in and I am a party of one :) I've never heard of the Seven App - sounds like a good idea to squeeze in a little workout throughout the day.

  4. Cool you love fitbit too! Nice that you are the favorite Aunt!! It's ok for us parents that have kids that don't get tired on the playground as when they get home and in bed, they crash in bed easily! :)

  5. I too love the short workout videos like T25/Piyo/P90X3 when I have a kiddo with me! But now that both of them are in school at least twice a week, it's easier get runs done or workout videos. Also, my supportive husband watches the kiddos on Sundays when I do long runs. :)
